Luxury Home/Office by Studio Remy Meijers in Utrecht, Netherlands
In the very centre of Utrecht (the Netherlands) interior architect Remy Meijers designed a residence to live/work in, for himself and his girlfriend. The 400 year old monument alongside a canal, that was in a very poor condition, used to be an office for a local roundtrip company. The upper floors were in use as a students’ house.
The building, consisting of three floors, includes a front house and a back house that were originally connected through a narrow passage. To realise the desired interior, the building was stripped until the original construction was exposed. During this process several authentic details and ornaments were found and preserved. Then the entire architectural structure was adjusted to the current standards and wishes. Also taken into account is a very advanced light plan and an optimal architectural integration of a audio and home theatre system. On the ground floor you can now find the office of Studio Remy Meijers as well as a scullery and the central stairwell that is built on the former inner courtyard between the front and back house. The living spaces are located on the first and second floor. First floor: a large open space where the kitchen is located as well as the dining area, the living area and, in the back house, a guest room including a small bathroom. Second floor: a continuing space that is locally segmented and that accommodates a sleeping section, a walk-in closet and a luxurious bathroom. Also, on a short term basis, a spacious roof terrace will be realised by removing the roof of the back house.
The result is an interesting mix between old and new elements where ingenious constructive solutions are applied to realise the desired image: large open spaces with clear sight lines, a sober and elegant look with respect for the authenticity.
